In recent days, Hangzhou has experienced a steady drop in temperatures, with the low reaching near freezing. Yet in the activity room on the eighth floor of the Zhejiang Academy of Engineering, bursts of cheers echo constantly as everyone gathers around the ping-pong table to watch the match. The two sides are locked in a tight contest, creating an atmosphere that is both tense and electric, punctuated by occasional shouts of “Great shot!” that reverberate throughout the hall.
This “Process & Piping Cup” table tennis tournament was specially organized by the Zhejiang Engineering Institute’s trade union to enrich employees’ leisure activities, strengthen communication and collaboration across departments, foster camaraderie among staff, and promote a harmonious corporate culture. Forty-four participating employees were divided into four groups by draw; the groups then faced off in head-to-head matches, with the top two advancing to a knockout round to determine the team champion. In the first round of the team competition, the winning players were drawn again to compete in the individual event. In the men’s singles, players progressed through rounds of 18-to-9, 9-to-5, and a final five‑player round-robin, with rankings determined by points to decide the championship, runner-up, and third‑place finishers—culminating in a series of intense and engaging contests.
Over the course of the two-day competition, the participants demonstrated extraordinary fighting spirit and unwavering determination. On the first day, in the team event, each squad gave it their all, deploying every skill and strategy to secure victory for their team. After two rounds of intense head-to-head matches, the team led by the Office emerged victorious, claiming the championship, while the team spearheaded by the Civil Engineering Department took second place. The next day’s individual events reached a fever pitch, particularly during the semifinal round-robin, where the five remaining competitors were evenly matched yet brought distinctly different styles to the table. Before the matches, seasoned observers confidently predicted that the top three would come from among these favorites—yet an unexpected dark horse burst onto the scene, surging through three consecutive rounds to advance straight to the final. In the championship showdown, the score remained locked in a seesaw battle, with the lead changing hands repeatedly and the contest at times deadlocked. A young player pulled off a stunning upset, winning two games in a row, while the veteran held firm under pressure, adjusted his strategy, and mounted a remarkable comeback to level the score at 3–2. Following the match, company leaders presented trophies and medals to the top three teams, as well as to the top three men’s and women’s singles players.
The atmosphere on the field was tense, while off the field it was electric, with cheers from the cheerleaders ringing out continuously. Veteran players enthusiastically offered on-the-spot coaching to their new teammates, sharing valuable game‑day experience and helping their teammates refine their strategies. Meanwhile, the competitors were learning and improving as they competed. Every so often, spectators would hand the team members bottles of water to boost their spirits, and there were even moments of lighthearted banter, making for a lively and spirited scene. Though the two days of competition have come to an end, everyone remains thrilled, vividly recounting the most thrilling moments with great enthusiasm.
At this table tennis tournament, employees bonded through the sport and honed their skills, showcasing the designers’ exceptional technique and spirited determination, while embodying the Zhejiang Engineering Institute’s ethos of unity and upward momentum. Moving forward, the institute’s trade union will continue to organize more healthy and meaningful activities, enabling everyone to unwind after work, experience the company’s corporate culture, and approach their duties with renewed energy, thereby injecting fresh vitality into the organization’s growth.
