Zhejiang Engineering Design Co., Ltd., located on Jiangcheng Road in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, traces its origins to the Juhua Design Institute. In 2003, the company relocated in its entirety to downtown Hangzhou, where its seven-and-a-half‑story office building is nestled among older residential buildings. Recently, in response to the national Fire Safety Publicity Month campaign and guided by the principle of “prioritizing public safety, grounding ourselves in political security, and basing our efforts on economic security,” the company invited the Lantian Rescue Team of Shangcheng District, Hangzhou, to organize a series of fire‑safety initiatives. These included fire‑safety education and training sessions, emergency evacuation drills, and an opportunity for design professionals to visit the Gulou Fire Station in Shangcheng District to experience hands‑on firefighting and rescue operations.
At the start of the event, experts from the Blue Sky Rescue Team showed videos of real-life incidents—such as a large truck engulfed in foam‑filled flames, an electric scooter on fire, and curtains ablaze—and vividly explained the essential conditions for fires to occur as well as preventive measures. For example, if an electric battery catches fire in daily life, the first priority is to remain calm; if the fire breaks out during charging, immediately cut off the power supply. If the blaze is small, use a fire extinguisher or move the burning scooter to an open, outdoor area. If the fire is large, evacuate the scene promptly and call 119. Once smoke and flames fill a room, you have only about one to two minutes to save yourself; if flashover has already occurred, your chances of escape are virtually zero. Therefore, if you cannot extinguish the fire on your own, dial the fire department without delay. When escaping, cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel, and if you encounter thick smoke, crawl low to the ground to avoid inhaling it. In these life‑and‑death moments, your life is your most precious asset—never turn back out of attachment to possessions.
Experts also pointed out that everyday unsafe practices—such as carelessly discarding cigarette butts, haphazardly connecting electrical cords, and using aged wiring—as well as poor habits like leaving a pot simmering on low heat unattended, sleeping with an electric blanket on all night, storing clutter in hallways, overcharging mobile phones, and operating appliances beyond their rated capacity—can all pose significant fire hazards. Finally, guidance was provided on proper procedures for calling emergency services, conducting initial fire suppression, mastering escape techniques, and safely using firefighting equipment.
Emergency evacuation and fire‑extinguishing drills are also of critical importance. By simulating fire scenarios, the company’s well‑established command, evacuation, and rapid‑escape systems were further tested, while the coordination among departments and floors and the timeliness of information sharing were likewise evaluated. The fire‑extinguishing drill enabled employees to gain hands‑on experience in proper firefighting techniques and other essential fire‑safety knowledge.
The following day, the company once again arranged for staff to visit the Gulou Fire Station in Shangcheng District for an emergency fire safety tour and training session.
Through a series of fire safety training sessions, the overall safety level of the company’s office building has been significantly enhanced. These initiatives also empower every employee to respond appropriately in the event of a fire or other emergency, thereby safeguarding the lives and property of all staff members.
