Ningbo Donggang Electrochemical Company’s 160 kt/a Ion-Exchange Membrane Caustic Soda Technology Upgrade Project
The Donggang Electrochemical Caustic Soda Plant is located within the Xiebei Petrochemical Industrial Zone of the Daxie Island Economic Development Zone in Ningbo. Currently, the Donggang facility has commissioned a 260,000‑ton‑per‑year ion‑exchange membrane caustic soda unit, a 60,000‑ton‑per‑year diaphragm caustic soda unit, and associated facilities for producing synthetic hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and utility systems. The plant was constructed in three phases, all of which were designed by our institute. The most recent phase involves the design of a new expansion project to add a single 200,000‑ton‑per‑year ion‑exchange membrane caustic soda unit, with a total investment of RMB 450 million. This includes facilities for producing 200,000 tons per year of 32% caustic soda, 100,000 tons per year of 48% caustic soda, 200,000 tons per year of liquid chlorine, and 100,000 tons per year of sodium hypochlorite solution. The ion‑exchange membrane electrolyzers primarily utilize natural‑circulation membrane‑cell electrolyzers supplied by Bluestar (Beijing) Chemical Machinery Co., Ltd. Chlorine drying employs a three‑tower system, using sulfuric acid as the drying medium; the moisture content of the outlet chlorine can be maintained below 100 ppm.
